Spiritual Self Defense

Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you feared for your physical safety or for the safety of those around you?  Perhaps you were walking down the street and noticed a questionable looking person walking toward you, or worse yet behind you.  Perhaps you were in a parking lot, late at night, and something just didn’t seem right. Perhaps you have feared for the safety of your family in similar situations. At those time, did you ever wish you knew a few self defense moves; something to help you defend yourself, until you could get to a place of safety?

If this has happened to you, then a martial arts course might the answer to your problem, but that is NOT what this is about. Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you feared for your spiritual safety or the safety of those around you? Perhaps you were walking through life and noticed yourself engaging in some questionable behavior. Perhaps you struggle with what to say or how to respond when you see an opening to share the gospel with someone. Perhaps your family is in danger of succumbing to the evils of this world. At those times, did you ever wish you knew a little more about the Bible and how God would want you to act, respond, or minister? If this has happened to you, then Spiritual Self Defense is the answer to your problem.

The more I read the Bible the more convinced I am of the spiritual warfare that is going on all around us.  God needs warriors for His kingdom that can answer the call and stand up for what is right. The Bible clearly states, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12 KJV).  The Bible calls for us to “Put on the whole armor of God.”

The question then is, are you ready to obey God’s word and put on the whole armor of God?  Are you willing to prepare yourself to both defend against the evil one, and to take him on offensively?  Are you willing to be a warrior in God’s army? For those who answer yes to the above, I offer you a course called Spiritual Self Defense (SSD). SSD is a course of study whereby you will become disciplined in four areas of spiritual warfare. These include…

  1. Studying the Bible (not just reading it, but actually studying each passage, taking notes and asking questions). The Bible says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword…..”(Hebrews 4:12 KJV). This is the kind of weapon I want in the fight against Satan.
  2. Scripture memorization. This is an essential discipline I fear many Christians are lacking, which leaves them vulnerable to attack. God’s word says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11 KJV)
  3. Prayer. This is again a powerful weapon which can be wielded against Satan.  The Bible says, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication…” (Ephesians 6:18 KJV).
  4. Service. Although salvation is not found in works, it is clear that God expects us to work for His kingdom while here on earth.  The Bible says, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” (James 2: 17&18 KJV).

These are the four primary disciplines taught and studied in the SSD course. These are NOT the only disciplines, but rather the four basic skills each person will be expected to work on (much in the same manner as a skilled martial artist would work on their stretching, sparring, katas, and strength training). Each person, as they continue on their journey will be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned and be awarded belts from White Belt to Black Belt and beyond (just as in other martial arts).

If you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and is true then you must also believe we, as Christians, are in a spiritual warfare whose outcome holds eternal consequences.  I cannot stress this enough; those souls lost in the battle are lost FOREVER. Are you ready then to commit yourself to the battle?  Are you ready to prepare yourself to be not just a servant but a warrior for the kingdom?  Are you ready to do whatever it takes to gain a closer walk with the God? If your answer to the above questions is “Yes” then SSD is for you.  If, however, you are not ready for a serious commitment and a serious walk with God, then please do not commit yourself to this journey until you are ready. This is not for the lukewarm Christian who wants salvation only for themselves. This is for those who are willing to heed God’s call and become warriors in His army.
Please give the above serious consideration and prayer and if you feel you are ready for something greater, then please see Rich Hudson, Greg Wills, or Dave Roberts.
P.S. – There is a possibility that those who join the course will also be afforded the opportunity (not required in any way) to learn some physical self defense as well (if they so choose).

Congratulations to Sheryl Hazelwood on achieving her white belt and congratulations to Richard Hudson on achieving the level of 2nd Degree Black Belt!
